What is the California Young Reader Program? |
The CYRM program encourages recreational reading among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the coveted Medals. |
Who votes? |
Students, who have experienced all of the nominated books in a category by reading the books themselves, having the books read to them, or using a combination of the two, are qualified to vote. |
When do the students vote? |
Voting will take place in March, 2008. |
How many categories are there? |
There are five categories--ranging from primary to young adult. |
How are the books chosen? |
The books are nominated by California students, teachers, and librarians. They are selected by a statewide committee. |
Is there an award for the author/illustrator who wins in each category? |
The winning author/illustrator in each category wins the Young Reader Medal. This is a highly prized writing award because winners are chosen by students. |
How will we participate in the program at Don Callejon School? |
The library will sponsor this program. Students will be introduced to the books, beginning in October. Primary students will have all books read to them, while students in grades 3-8 will be encouraged to read independently. Multiple copies will be purchased of all books applicable to grades 3-8. |
How can students be involved? |
§ Set a goal for yourself to read the books in your category. § Read the books in your category. § Think about what you liked and disliked about each book. § Talk to your teachers, friends, and parents about the books. § Volunteer in the library to share a book with a younger reader. § Vote for your favorite book. § Know that your vote counts. The authors are counting on you. |
How can parents become involved? |
§ Be enthusiastic about the program. § Encourage your children to read the books appropriate for their level. § Take your children to the public library to check out the books. § Read the books with your children. § Discuss the books with your children. § Talk to your children about the importance of being a responsible voter. |
