Birthday Book Program |
Why do we have a Birthday Book Program? |
The Birthday Book Program has three goals: It celebrates student birthdays. It motivates students to read. It supports the DCS library. |
How does it work? |
Parents who wish to participate fill out the online Birthday Book Form or request a printed form. (423-3341 or library@doncallejon.org) The form must be returned -- along with the payment -- at least 6 weeks prior to their child’s birthday month. (For September and October of 2006 the due date is September 15.) The form has entries for including information about the reading interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes of their child. This information is used as part of the book selection criteria. Book plates with the child’s names are affixed inside the book. One day a month, the principal presents the books to the students to acknowledge their birthdays. Students are allowed to keep their books until they finish reading it. They then donate it to the DCS library so it may be read by other students. |
What is the cost of the books? |
Soft back books cost $6.00 and hard back books cost $16.00, tax included. |
Who buys the books? |
The librarian is responsible for selection and purchasing the books. It would be great if there were parent volunteers interested in assisting in this activity. This task is a lot of fun, interesting, and very rewarding. Books will be purchased at Hicklebee's, a fantastic children’s bookstore in San Jose. The Hicklebee's staff is willing and able to help in the selection of the books. |
Summer and September Birthdays |
This year, participating students with September Birthdays will be presented with their books in October. Participating students with Summer birthdays will be given their books in June. They can keep them throughout the summer and return them in September. |
Can parents return the form now for later birthdays? |
Absolutely. Return the forms at any time as long it is at least one and one half months prior to the birthday month. |
